Using the Internet and audience systems for profit

Although many companies are trying to cut back on their running costs due to the current economic climate, a fair proportion of retailers are maintaining their spending on market research in an attempt to gain the upper hand over their competitors. Public opinion poll companies are themselves investing heavily in both new and established technologies to improve the way in which they collect information from consumers across the whole country. Web design specialists can make a big difference to the visual appeal of sites and it is vital for polling firms to attract visitors to their sites and to encourage them to stay and complete surveys if at all possible. Market research companies also canvass opinions directly by inviting people to view corporate advertisements and to give their opinion on what they have seen. The communications equipment that allows people to vote on television game shows can be employed at such viewings to allow consumers to express their honest opinions whilst remaining completely anonymous. This may improve the accuracy of the data that is collected, making it more useful to the companies that are paying for it.

The type of devices that are available to companies in the UK are not limited to those that only feature a few buttons, which users can press to answer multiple choice questions. Some devices have a full keyboard and an integral microphone, which can be used by people to talk to canvassers and other consumers when viewing marketing material. These interactive response gadgets not only make it easy for people to express their opinions when asked, they also enable opinion pollsters to collate these opinions almost instantly. There is no need to bother with old-style forms that have to be filled in with a pen when using these devices. Surveys that require detailed written answers can be conducted online using a well-designed website to enable people to submit their thoughts on a variety of topics without even having to leave their own home. This type of website is particularly useful during the colder months as many shoppers are not keen to stand and chat on street corners when the temperature drops below zero. However, they are perfectly happy to spend a few minutes on their computers at home.

Market research companies, in common with all commercial organisations, have to keep an eye on costs to make sure that they turn a profit. This means that they are not willing to buy the latest remote communications devices that are designed to increase audience participation without a good reason. If you work for such a company and are looking for a reason to invest in this technology, the fact that it could cut down on the amount of time needed to collect opinions from consumers should be taken into account. Most firms appreciate the importance of an effective website that is easy to navigate and offers the functionality that they need to canvass opinions on the Internet but they may remain undecided about wireless keypads and the receivers with which they communicate. In the final analysis, whether it is truly worth investing in new technology can only be judged in hindsight but a comprehensive study of the possible benefits may help to make things a little clearer. Early adopters of Internet technology reaped significant benefits from their decision and the same may be true for these devices.

Whilst it is exceedingly unlikely that remote voting systems will be considered anywhere near as important as the Internet when we look back on the 20th and 21st centuries, it is possible that they could give opinion pollsters an edge against their competition. For this reason, they may be worth serious consideration. However, new companies that are just starting out would be well advised to concentrate their efforts on building a unique website that helps them to establish a positive corporate image and encourages consumers to think of them whenever they wish to take a survey. The web design industry is more mature than that for remote participation devices, so it should be easier to pick a decent team to work with. However, it should be possible to evaluate manufacturers of new equipment by reading independent reviews on the Internet and by following the progress of these companies as they expand. If more and more companies begin to adopt the technology in an effort to gather data more efficiently, it is probably a good idea to look more closely at audience systems and what they have to offer.
